India is a country with a mixed climate where problems like torrential rains, floods, and drought keep coming up in different seasons. Nearly 3,000 people have lost their lives this year due to bad weather.
To deal with this problem, India is starting a venture to use artificial intelligence (AI) to create advanced climate models to improve weather predictions.
In fact, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) hopes that AI-based climate models and advisories, leveraging the latest AI advancements, will help improve forecasts, especially for severe weather conditions like floods and droughts. At present, IMD does forecasting using mathematical models and supercomputers. However, with the integration of AI advancement, higher-quality and lower-cost weather data can be generated.
However, the IMD is already using AI to help create public alerts for conditions such as heat waves and disease outbreaks such as malaria. Along with this, IMD is planning to increase the number of weather observatories up to village level with the aim of high-resolution forecasting data.
For which the government has also established a center for testing and using AI. However, experts say that integrating AI capabilities into weather forecasting will require high-resolution data.
Accurate weather forecasting is especially important in a country with diverse weather patterns like India, as its 1.4 billion inhabitants are increasingly affected by drought, heat waves, and intense floods every year. As the second-largest producer of rice, wheat, and sugar, India also plays a major role in the world's agricultural production.
Additionally, weather agencies around the world are focusing on AI, which can reduce costs and improve speed, with the UK Met Office saying it could revolutionize weather forecasting. A recent Google-funded model may have outperformed traditional methods. Already, emerging technologies like blockchain and crypto are being used for weather forecasting.
